frequently asked questions
What versions of QuickBooks Desktop integrate with Digit?
Chevron down icon

QuickBooks Desktop manufacturing is possible when integrating with a tool like Digit. However, with so many different versions of QBD available, it can be confusing to understand if your version can integrate with Digit. Here is the list of compatible versions you can integrate with Digit:

  • U.S. editions of QuickBooks Financial Software products
  • QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions
  • QuickBooks Premier (2002 or later)
  • QuickBooks Pro and Pro Plus (2002 or later)
  • QuickBooks Simple Start (2006 or later)
  • Canadian editions of QuickBooks Pro, Premier or Enterprise (2003 or later)
  • UK editions of QuickBooks Pro or Accountant Edition (2003 or later)
  • QuickBooks Point of Sale (v4.0 or later) - QBWC 2.1.0.30 or earlier

How does the QuickBooks Desktop integration work?

The Digit and QuickBooks Desktop integration lets you link your Digit account to your QBD company file through the QuickBooks Web Connector. To get started, enter your QuickBooks company file path in Digit, download the connection file, and approve Digit in the Web Connector.

Once the setup is complete, Digit brings in your customers, vendors, and items from QBD. Any sales orders, invoices, or purchase orders you make in Digit are sent to QuickBooks. Bills you create in Digit also sync to QuickBooks as vendor bills.

After the first sync, you choose which QuickBooks accounts to use for Cost of Goods Sold and Sales of Product Income.

The Web Connector can be scheduled to automatically sync in the background, as often as every minute if you choose to set it up like that. You can also start a manual sync whenever you need.

This integration keeps your accounting and operational data consistent between systems. It removes the need for manual data entry and makes it easier to manage sales, purchasing, and inventory in both Digit and QuickBooks Desktop.

Can QuickBooks Desktop handle manufacturing?
Chevron down icon

Yes, particularly if you use QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise: Manufacturing & Wholesale.

It supports:

  • Bills of materials and assemblies
  • Multi-location and bin tracking
  • Serial/lot numbers
  • Barcode scanning
  • Landed costs

Premier can handle basic assemblies but it requires more manual work, such as tracking work in progress and rolling up costs.

The main limitation of QuickBooks Desktop is that it is an accounting system, not a full MRP. It does not include built-in production scheduling or many other features needed to manage inventory, production, and shipping.

This is why many manufacturers choose to integrate a system like Digit, which helps them manage both their finances and their manufacturing tasks more easily.

What are the limitations of QuickBooks Desktop inventory?
Chevron down icon

QuickBooks Desktop works well for accounting, but its inventory control features become less effective as your business grows or operations get more complex.

Forecasting is limited because there is no true demand planning, MRP, or automatic reorder suggestions based on BOMs and open orders. Manufacturing reports are also limited.

  • You can’t see all the materials needed across different assemblies in one place
  • It’s hard to track which workstations and materials are currently being used
  • Reports focused on margins and lots are limited

Barcode and serial number workflows are restrictive. Scanning options are limited, there are no lot expiration features, serial entry is awkward, and mobile warehouse tools can’t handle ad-hoc changes or many receiving details.

Manufacturing features only go as far as BOMs and Build Assemblies. The following features are missing:

  • Routings
  • Work orders
  • Scheduling
  • WIP automation
  • Allocating builds to specific sales orders

Enterprise offers multi-bin features but it lacks in-transit or non-sellable status options, and some site-level reports are missing. These gaps cause problems with just-in-time operations:

  • Generating component POs from sales orders
  • Handling prepayments
  • Handling receiving differences often means using manual workarounds

Finally, limits on company file size, lists, and lines, along with issues from negative inventory, mean that large or fast-growing businesses will outgrow Desktop unless they use add-ons.
