Stage 1
Novice Level

Stage 2
Beginner Level

Summary

You know there is a better way to run your business but don’t exactly know how to get there. Lots of data is being generated in your business but little is captured, visible or drives meaningful change. Processes might lack automation and legacy systems that aren’t cloud based might be in use. At this stage it’s tempting to get sidetracked with buzzwords like AI, big data, neural networks and machine learning. However, it’s important to first get the basics right. Without capturing and aggregating crucial data in automated ways, the business won’t be able to reach its full potential.

  • The company has a north star, but the steps to get there aren’t defined

  • Core processes depend on excel sheets prone to error or legacy systems that aren’t cloud based

  • Some crucial data isn’t being captured and no data is consolidated in one place in real-time

  • Processes have automation potential

  • Systems aren’t integrated

  • Employees find themselves entering the same data twice frequently

  • Employees are hesitant about new solutions but get comfortable with new solutions after some time

Stage 3

Typically, companies at this level have systems that communicate with each other but there tends to be no central source of truth that consolidates and visualizes data in real-time. Data might be discoverable for most employees but doesn’t contain helpful context. Building out a company scorecard that allows employees to access the most important metrics in one place in real-time is the most valuable next step.

Stage 4
Expert Level

Summary

Your organization is running highly efficient processes and displays an extremely effective use of data. Companies at the expert level tend to run on one integrated software system. Data is a major component of your organization’s strategy and data-driven decision making is highly valued. Companies at this stage are equipped to focus on innovation and proactive expansion. Your foundation is strong enough to allow you to explore advanced data models using AI and predictive analytics.

  • Highly efficient and automated processes

  • A single integrated software system

  • Clearly defined metrics on both of the organization as well as department level

  • A strong data-culture

  • A master scorecard that displays company wide data in real-time all in one place

  • Employees are excited about new software and proactively engage in the process of optimizing systems
